The Best BMI Calculator

BMI - Body Mass Index

You can use this BMI calculator to verify your body mass index (BMI) and find out if you’re a healthy weight.

Body Mass Index (BMI) is calculated by dividing a person’s weight in kilograms (or pounds) by their height in meters squared (or feet). A high BMI can indicate excessive body fat. BMI screens for weight categories that may lead to health problems, but it does not diagnose an individual’s body fatness or health.

If you think that you might have an eating disorder, we do not recommend that you use the BMI calculator. Instead, we advise you to seek further advice from your GP.

How to interpret the result from the BMI Calculator:

A. Underweight – If you are thin or have lost a lot of weight recently, it could be a sign that something is wrong. You may not be eating enough, or you may be ill. Talk to your doctor if you are worried about your weight.

B. Normal weight – Your hard work is paying off, so keep it up! To help you maintain your healthy weight, check out the food, diet, and fitness sections for tips.

C. Overweight – If you are overweight, the best way to lose weight is to eat healthy and exercise regularly.

D. Class I-III Obese – If you are in this category of obese, the best way to lose weight is through a combination of diet, exercise, and medicine. See a doctor for help and advice.

Calculating your BMI may not be as easy as it sounds. With BMI Calculator, you do not have to worry about it.

BMI values in adults are not related to age and are the same for both sexes.

However, calculating BMI in children and teenagers is a little different. At different ages, girls and boys develop at different rates and have different amounts of body fat. As a result, BMI measurements during childhood and adolescence take age and gender into account.

Doctors and other health professionals do not divide children into healthy weight categories for the following reasons:

  • They change with each month of age;
  • Male and female body types change at different rates and the child’s height changes.

BMI is based on the assumption that you have an average amount of body fat, including ‘intra-abdominal fat,’ which is fat deep inside your stomach cavity rather than under your skin. Intra-abdominal fat is much more closely linked to the risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease than skin fat.

If you are extremely muscular, your body fat percentage may be lower than predicted by your BMI. However, this only applies to people who exercise at a high level – much more than the average.

A recent study comparing BMI, waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, and waist-to-height ratio discovered that the waist-height ratio was the most accurate way of predicting your total body fat level.

Simply divide your waist circumference by your height – obviously, both measurements should be in imperial (inches) or metric (cm) (cm).

Measuring your waist is a good way to determine if you are carrying too much fat around your stomach, which can increase your risk of developing heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and stroke. Even if you have a healthy body mass index (BMI), you can still have too much fat around your waist, which puts you at risk for these conditions.
